We spent a few restful days with Katinka , our neighbour from our first home at Riddell Street, Bulimba, on her barge at Roanne
Katinka turned out to be an excellent hostess, tour guide and translator and spent the next couple of days showing us around the area.
On the first day, Katinka took us south of Roanne along the Loire Valley.
Our first stop was the Chateau de la Roche near the village of Villerest on the Loire River
The village of Pommiers
We got lost on the way to our next destination but enjoyed the views of the Loire Valley
The ruined Chateau des Cornes d’Urfe
The medieval village of Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire
Panoramic views from the tower
Afternoon sun over the canal in Roanne
On the second day Katinka showed us around the area north of Roanne.
The famous white Charolais beef cattle
Beautiful stone carving on the Abbaye de Charlieu
Looking a bit sheepish
WWII Memorial for the dead citizens of Charlieu
Armed and dangerous
Spring in the Loire Valley
Semur en Briennais
Views from outside the walls of the village
Paray
The Basilica
Outdoor chapel in the grounds of the Basilica
A medieval walled garden at Ambiere divided into quarters – leisure, medicinal herbs, vegetables and fruit
Storm brewing in the background
We arrived back at Roanne just as it started to rain
