Thursday, 15 August 2013 – Mingun, Myanmar

On Thursday, we caught the public ferry to Mingun, a town located 11 km up the Ayeyarwady River on the west bank from Mandalay.  It was overcast so we were able to stand on the top deck of the ferry and enjoy the views for the 50 minute journey to Mingun.

Mingun’s main attraction is the ruined Pahtodawgyi Paya.  This would have been the world’s biggest stupa had it been finished however only the bottom third was complete. An earthquake had created several large cracks in the Paya and because of this no one was able to climb it.

Instead of walking down the main street, we walked along the dusty paths behind the monuments. This worked out really well because we were able to bypass all the souvenir vendors and we were able to see the villagers going about their daily lives.
